KCMPA: Who Are We & What We Do
What is KCMPA? KCMPA — the Kansas City Metropolitan Physician Association — is an Independent Physician Association (IPA) dedicated to supporting independent medical practices across Missouri and Kansas. Since 2012, KCMPA has provided member practices with access to resources, contracts, and services that help them remain independent and competitive in today's healthcare environment.
Why should I join KCMPA?
KCMPA helps independent healthcare practices remain independent by providing access to cost-saving opportunities, employee benefits, medical malpractice solutions, business partnerships, educational programs, networking, and physician-led collaboration. Our goal is to reduce administrative burdens so practices can focus on delivering exceptional patient care.
Who is KCMPA designed for? KCMPA is designed for independent healthcare practices throughout Missouri and Kansas. Our membership includes primary care physicians, specialists, dental and oral health practices, and allied healthcare providers who want the strength of a physician-led association while maintaining the independence of private practice. Whether you are a solo practitioner or a multi-provider practice, KCMPA offers resources and services designed to support your success.
How long has KCMPA been operating? KCMPA has been supporting independent medical practices in the Kansas City metro since 2012. In 2024, we were able to extend our reach and offer membership to all independent practices anywhere in Missouri and Kansas. Over more than a decade, the association has grown its network and expanded its services to meet the evolving needs of independent physicians and their teams.
Is KCMPA only for physicians, or can other practice staff benefit? While KCMPA's membership is rooted in independent physician practices, the association's services — including employee benefits and employee perks — extend to the entire practice. Staff at member practices can access benefits and savings alongside the physicians they support.
KCMPA: Let’s Talk About Membership
How do I join KCMPA? Joining KCMPA begins with a conversation. Independent physicians and practices interested in membership can reach out directly through our website to connect with KCMPA’s Director of Operations who will walk you through the process and help determine the best fit for your practice.
What size practices does KCMPA work with? KCMPA works with independent practices of varying sizes — from solo physicians to multi-provider groups. The association's services are designed to be accessible and beneficial regardless of practice size, giving smaller practices access to resources typically available only to larger health systems.
Do I have to be in the Kansas City metro area to join? KCMPA's membership was once focused on independent practices operating within the Kansas City metropolitan area, including communities on both the Missouri and Kansas sides of the metro. But in 2024, we were able to extend our reach and offer membership to independent practices anywhere in Missouri and Kansas.
What types of providers can become members of KCMPA? KCMPA welcomes independent Primary Care physicians, Specialists, Dental and Oral Health Practices, and Allied Healthcare Providers. While our membership structure includes three membership categories—Primary Care, Specialists, and Allied Healthcare Providers—we have expanded our association to welcome independent dental and oral health practices as part of our growing community of independent healthcare providers.
Who qualifies as a Primary Care member? Primary Care membership is available to independent physicians and practices whose focus is foundational, ongoing patient care — including family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, and similar disciplines. Primary Care members form the core of KCMPA's network and have full access to the association's value-based contracts, employee benefits, medical malpractice program, and vendor agreements.
Who qualifies as a Specialist member? Specialist membership is open to independent physicians practicing in a defined medical specialty outside of primary care. Specialists who join KCMPA gain access to the same resources as Primary Care members, including, employee benefits, medical malpractice program, and vendor savings — but also contracts with QuikTrip helping specialty practices remain competitive and independent.
What is an Allied Healthcare Provider and does KCMPA accept them as members? Yes. Allied Healthcare Provider membership recognizes the important role licensed healthcare professionals play in supporting patient care. Eligible providers may include physical and occupational therapists, chiropractors, mental and behavioral health providers, acupuncturists, audiologists, aestheticians, dental and oral health providers, and other licensed healthcare professionals who complement physicians and dental care.
Is there a cost to join KCMPA? Yes, KCMPA membership is structured around a one-time membership fee when a practice joins and a straightforward monthly dues model based on provider type and status.

KCMPA: Benefits and Services
What employee benefits does KCMPA offer member practices? KCMPA provides member practices with access to employee benefits that are typically available only to larger organizations. By leveraging the collective size of the association's membership, independent practices can offer their staff competitive benefits packages — helping them attract and retain quality employees without the administrative burden of sourcing and negotiating those benefits on their own.
How does KCMPA help with medical malpractice coverage? KCMPA works to connect member practices with medical malpractice coverage options that are negotiated at the association level. This gives independent physicians and practices access to competitive rates and trusted coverage that supports the long-term security of their practice.
How is working with KCMPA's broker different from using an individual broker? KCMPA's broker approaches medical malpractice coverage differently than a typical individual broker. Rather than simply renewing with an incumbent carrier, KCMPA's broker shops multiple carriers for each member practice individually, ensuring that coverage is tailored to the specific needs, specialty, and risk profile of that practice.
Because medical malpractice is underwritten on an individual group basis, this personalized approach matters. Member practices benefit from having a knowledgeable advocate who understands the healthcare landscape, knows which carriers are competitive for a given specialty or practice type, and ensures that every renewal is evaluated on its merits — not just accepted as a default increase.
Additionally, KCMPA's established relationship with its medical malpractice partner means member practices have access to preferred pricing that independent practices working outside the association would not typically receive. It is one more way KCMPA membership delivers tangible financial value to independent practices.
What are value-based contracts and how does KCMPA help member practices with them? Value-based contracts tie reimbursement to patient outcomes and quality metrics rather than volume of services. Navigating these contracts as a solo or small independent primary care practice can be challenging. KCMPA helps member practices participate in value-based arrangements by providing the support, and collective leverage needed to engage with payers effectively — allowing independent practices to compete on the same terms as larger health systems.
